CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Olga Bazhanova’s third-set 7-5 win Sunday afternoon completed a remarkable rally by regular-season champion Northwestern State, handing the Lady Demons a dramatic 4-3 victory over 2009 champion Texas-Arlington for the Southland Conference Tournament title and NSU’s first-ever berth in next month’s NCAA Women’s Tennis Team Championships.

The victory was the 20th consecutive for Northwestern (21-1), which was unbeaten in the 11-match SLC regular season and three SLC Tournament contests this weekend. It came after UTA (13-7) built a 3-1 lead, sweeping the lower three singles matches in straight sets following the Lady Demons capturing the opening doubles point.

“It’s just amazing. Down 3-1, we had both feet in the grave, so to speak,” said fourth-year Lady Demons coach Patric DuBois. “I’ve been on the other side of championship matches like that twice and it’s not fun. It’s the first time that I’ve been on the right side of a close one with this much at stake, and it is a great feeling.”
