Women’s achievement spotlighted

On April 25 at the Natchitoches Events Center, the Natchitoches Black Heritage Committee honored women who have achieved significant successes in the Natchitoches community and touted the unique ways in which women have moved the city forward financially, culturally, and spiritually.

The event host was District 3 City Councilwoman Sylvia Morrow, and the event was emceed by Feamula Bradley, regional coordinator of the Louisiana Public Health Institute and Tobacco Free Living, Shreveport.  Ed Ward served as presenter of awards, along with Police Jury member Mimi Stoker and Northwestern State University professor William Broussard. 

Special honorees included the Natchitoches Central Women’s Powerlifting and Basketball teams, who were both 5A State Champions in 2009-2010, and their coaches.  

The event’s keynote was delivered by Tarama Carter Davenport, who after a distinguished career in the armed forces now is a volunteer and philanthropist with organizations such as Artspace and she is founder of the Blanc et Noir Marching Society, one of Shreveport’s first Mardi Gras Krewes. 

Honorees included: Zwolle City Councilwoman Carolyn Cutright for public service; Mary Perry for community service; Karen Anderson for business; Cynthia LaCour for leadership; Minister Sharonda Demars for Christian service; Juanita Gordon for the Arts; April Wade for education; along with Ernestine Armstrong, Lavora Wilson, and LaCarsha Babers.
