Trecey Rew may be in uncharted waters, but so far it’s been clear skies and smooth sailing for the Northwestern State thrower as she prepares for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. this week.Rew qualified for the national meet in both the shot put and discus, breaking her own school discus record with a throw of 179 feet to win the regional championship at the NCAA East Preliminary on May 29. She said she has enjoyed a solid week of practice and feels confident that she will have a good showing when the discus competition begins tomorrow.

“It’s going all right,” Rew said after a practice session Tuesday afternoon. “I’m done practicing for the week now. There are some things that can be fixed, but I’m sure it will all come together when it’s time for the competition.”

Rew’s relaxed attitude may come as a bit of a surprise, given the hectic nature of the national meet and the attention it draws, but the 2012 Olympic hopeful said is trying to keep a level head and “stay within” herself in order to be at her best when the throws count.

Rew and Lady Demons throws coach Mike Heimerman both said the atmosphere has been much different than usual because of the hype surrounding the national meet.

“It has been kind of a whirlwind,” Heimerman said. “You know, track is kind of a forgotten sport, so we’re not necessarily used to all the media attention. Doing radio interviews and things like that, it’s a little out of the norm.”

Heimerman said Rew has had to make several changes to her technique, mainly due to the relative lack of humidity, in addition to fighting through a nagging wrist injury.

“She’s got a banged up wrist and we’ve also had to make some adjustments because it’s so dry. We’ve had to work on different grips. But it’s been pretty solid so far. Preparations have been going pretty well considering.”

According to Heimerman, Rew has regularly thrown the shotput 59 feet in practice and warmups, and such a mark at the national meet would likely win the event. Last year’s outdoor champion, Mariam Kevkhishvili of Florida, won with a throw of 58 feet, 4 inches.

“I just want to go out there and perform well,” Rew said. “I’m just going to block everything else out and compete for myself. I’m not shooting for any particular number or anything like that. Of course, I want to win, but as long as I can perform well, I’ll be okay with that.”
