Libraries offer far more than just books. People can look for a job, learn about local candidates for office, and find out how to file a consumer complaint at their local libraries. They will also find friendly librarians, Wi-Fi, and a comfortable chair once they step inside.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month at Rapides Parish Library (RPL), and the Library wants to make sure taxpayers are aware of all the services it has to offer. People should come into their local libraries, get a library cards, and take full advantage of the services they deserve as taxpaying citizens.

September is not the only month taxpayers can sign up for a free library card. Rapides Parish Library’s services are available year-round from ten branches, the Bookmobile, and the Red Carpet Service. “Everyone in Rapides Parish should have a library card because they’re free,” says Westside Regional Assistant Branch Manager Saconda Baty. “Walking into a library can open the world to you through the Internet, books, and DVDs.” Library Director Steve Rogge adds, “It’s our philosophy to provide easy access to services through parish-wide delivery systems for senior citizens and preschoolers, plus the Bookmobile, and branches strategically scattered throughout the parish.” RPL offers free computer classes on navigating the Internet and using computer programs like Word and Excel. The Library has tax forms, current magazines, and many other sources of helpful information. Taxpayers who don’t choose to visit the Library are losing out on great opportunities that go beyond reading books.

To find out more about the services RPL offers, visit www.rpl.org, come by one of the branches, or call (318) 445-2411. The Main Library is located at 411 Washington Street in downtown Alexandria, and the Westside Regional Library is located at 5416 Provine Place in Alexandria — just off La. Highway 28 West.

Rapides Parish Library is governed by the Library Board of Control. The Board is comprised of nine members who are appointed by the Police Jury. The Board and Library staffers work hard to make sure the Library serves its taxpaying community well.
