A day after the New Orleans Saints’ disappointing 30-20 loss at Arizona in which the offense struggled to find any sustained success, Coach Sean Payton reiterated on Monday that his team needs to play with more consistency.

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton was very business-like in his rehash of Sunday’s loss to Arizona.

In a game that started with the Saints looking like they were headed for a big win, they managed to blow a 10-0 lead in the first quarter by imploding with three interceptions, a fumble, a missed 29-yard field-goal attempt, a 25 percent touchdown percentage in the red zone and a handful of untimely penalties.

But the coach and his players said that despite not playing the type of football it did for much of last season when it captured the first Super Bowl title in franchise history, the Saints are not in panic mode.

In fact, Payton said he didn’t want to put any type of title on the way his 3-2 Saints are playing at the moment.

“Fortunately I don’t have to categorize it as one of those things,” Payton said. “That’s something that you guys (in the media) can categorize it as. It’s a period where it’s a loss.

“You know how this league is, it’s week by week. Do I think we can play better? Yes. And that’s the thing that’s encouraging, that’s the thing that gets you here and started on the next plan. And that’s the thing that gets you driven and motivated. So we don’t have to identify it as anything other than this is a setback clearly.

“Anytime you lose a game, we feel like it’s disappointing. But what’s most important is what you do about it. That’s the real good thing about the jobs we have. We get to come back and take another test this weekend.”
