Natchitoches welcomed the Christmas season — and thousands of visitors — on Saturday as it celebrated its 84th annual Natchitoches Christmas Festival.

Though the Festival of Lights started on Nov. 20, weekends in December mean a flurry of activities as Christmas gets nearer.

Officials estimate that approximately 500,000 people visit Natchitoches during the holiday season for the festivities.

Fireworks are held every Saturday at 7 p.m. There is no admission to watch the fireworks.

Events scheduled for this week include the free “Lessons and Carols” at Immaculate Conception Church, 613 Second St., at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and the Holiday Tour of Homes, which begins Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m.

The tour is sponsored by the Natchitoches Historical Foundation, and there is a fee.

For ticket information, call (800) 259-1714 or visit www.historicfoundation.org.
