No charges in text probe

No laws were broken when a series of text messages — one of which included a photo of a black man hanging from a tree — were sent to several black Metro Council members and a black state legislator, police said Monday.

“Although the investigation determined that the messages may have been offensive and distasteful, they did not contain any threats or violate any local, state or federal laws,” said Sgt. Don Kelly, a olice spokesman.

A 47-year-old black man from Zachary sent the messages and “made no effort to conceal his identity when he posted his opinions to an Internet social media site, which apparently resulted in the messages being received” by the council members and legislator, all of whom are women, Kelly said.

Police did not release the man’s name because he was not arrested. Recipients of the messages said they don’t know the man’s name, only the phone number from which the texts were sent.

A message left late Monday on a voicemail box attached to the phone number was not returned.

Metro Council members who received the messages said they contacted police last week after getting a text containing a picture of a black man hanging from a tree.

The text was sent to the council members prior to their vote concerning funding for a new downtown library.

The written part of the message, sent to The Advocate by Metro Councilwoman C. Denise Marcelle, reads as follows:

“This hanging took place Dec. 3, 2010, in Greenwood, ms (Mississippi).

“Everyone make sure we watch and listen to how our council rep votes, this evening on this library agenda.

“We must form a political watch DOG person or group to see how they vote and why they vote in whatever manner.

“Tune in I’ll be there!!!!!! In route.”
