NATCHITOCHES–Northwestern State University piano student MinJeong Kim was the grand prize winner of the 2011 Marjorie Stricklin Emerging Artists Competition in Monroe, performing the third movement of Tchaikovsky’s “Concerto #1.”

Kim was one of the winners of the 2009 Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Concerto Aria Competition and performed with the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony. She attended the prestigious Seoul Arts High School and Yewon School. Kim won several piano competitions in South Korea.

“The Tchaikovsky Concerto is a big beautiful piece that is well known and I
wanted to play it at least once,” said Kim. “At this competition, I found
out how to enjoy the stage and the music better. I hope to participate in
more competitions and this will help me.”

Kim studies with Assistant Professor of Piano Dr. Francis Yang.

“One of my teachers in Korea suggested I study in the United States to
experience a different system and style of teaching,” said Kim. “In the
United States, you can look at a work and interpret it for yourself.”

Kim said her first year in Natchitoches was difficult as she adjusted to
both a different culture and living in a small town.

“The people here are very kind. Everyone knows everyone,” she said. There
aren’t the distractions like there are in a big city like Seoul, so I can
focus on my studies.

“I have a good practice room and good instructors. I also have a lot of
opportunities to be an accompanist.”

As winner of the Stricklin Competition, Kim will perform with the Monroe
Symphony Orchestra during its 2011-12 season.
