Spring 2011 Music Guide

By Lewej Whitelow

Music guru/ local tastemaker, Lewej Whitelow, gives Hip-Hop fans a preview of what’s to come this upcoming Spring/ Summer in music.

Lupe Fiasco – Lasers
Hands down my #1 pick of albums dropping this year, despite having a track featuring Trey Song. Lupe never fails to give the fans what they want while maintaining his rhythmic flow and witty metaphors. Lasers will have more of an upbeat and positivity conscious feel too it. The cohesion & storytelling of his last studio effort, The Cool, will be missing, but his prowess as an artist still remains.

Kanye & Jay-Z – Watch the Throne
What’s not to love here? More game-changing beats & rhymes from Kanye & Jay-Z’s overall hip-hop dominance are sure to keep this album on repeat on my phone/ipod/car stereo/zune/walkman

Jean Grae – Cake or Death
My favorite Femcee & top 5 rappers out right now. The Evil “Jeanius” is sure to please with her hard hitting rhymes & witty lyricisms. Look for features from Mela Machinko, Pharoahe Monch, & Talib Kweli.

Jay Electronica – Act II: Patents of Nobility
I’ve been anxiously awaiting this album. There is notable controversy with an artist (Carter Whitelow, who could possibly be my cousin) surrounding the validity of Act I & the release of Act II. Despite the allegations, Act II has unlimited potential.

J. Cole – Cole World
This album will definitely open Jermaine to the main stream exposure he deserves. J. Cole should have blown up to Drake-esque proportions by now, especially given the level of critical acclaim for his mixtapes, and this will be the catalyst. With heartfelt lyrics & a story to tell, Cole keeps it fresh, and Cole World will be the embodiment of hip-hop.

Toss UP: Couldn’t decide between these two for the Top 6

Raekwon – Only Built For Cuban Linx 3

OR

Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang
Features from Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck & Black Thought

Honorable Mentions:

MF Doom – MF Doom – Operations: Doomsday – April 26

Kid Cudi & Dot Da Genius – Wizard (Rock Album) – Summer 2011

Andre 3000 – untitled

Kanye West – Summer 2011 – untitled
