NATCHITOCHES — Junior right-hander Kelee Grimes fired a no-hitter, the 11th in school history, posting 16 strikeouts Wednesday afternoon as Northwestern State completed a 4-0, 2-0 non-conference softball doubleheader sweep with 31 strikeouts of hitters from visiting Alcorn State, which was one-hit in the opener by sophomore righty Kylie Roos.

Grimes (5-6) walked two, the first in the fifth inning to end her bid for a perfect game. It was her second career gem and her first solo as she combined with Brooke Boening and former Lady Demon Jessica English to throw NSU’s last no-hitter on March 9, 2010 against Grambling. The Pineville native also notched her third complete game of the season.

Northwestern (22-16) got a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts by Roos in the opener against Alcorn (15-19), which has a win over nationally-ranked Texas Tech and recently split a doubleheader with Southern Mississippi. Right fielder Jasmine Hall recorded the Lady Braves’ lone hit of the day with a fourth-inning infield single off Roos (10-4).

Only two batters among the 11 Alcorn players who made contact were able to get the ball to the outfield in the twinbill.

In her last five appearances, Grimes has earned a 3-2 record with shutouts against Sam Houston State, Grambling State and Alcorn. She has 51 strikeouts in her last 35 innings of work, including a 10-inning outing where she hurled nine strikeouts and one walk against the Bearkats on March 27. Her performance against SHSU and Grambling State earned her the LSWA Pitcher of the Week award on March 30.

NSU moved to 6-0 against the Southwestern Athletic Conference with two previous wins each over Prairie View A&M and Grambling State. The Lady Demons will hit the road over the next week, taking on Texas-Arlington and Louisiana Tech before recapturing the home-field advantage against rival Southeastern Louisiana in a three-game SLC series starting April 16.

LC’S THOMAS HONORED: Louisiana College catcher Amber Thomas has been named the NFCA Division III National Player of the Week for games played March 28-April 3, the Association has announced. The senior helped the

No. 3-ranked Wildcats to a 6-0 week to bring their overall record to 26-4.

Thomas went 13-for-20 with three home runs, five doubles and 12 RBI to fuel the perfect week in American Southwest Conference (ASC) East Division play. The six wins included a pair of victories over defending national champion and then-No. 8 East Texas Baptist.

Thomas also scored seven runs, had two sacrifice flies and walked once. She tallied hits and RBIs during the last five games of the weekend, including a 5-for-5 effort and four RBIs against Ozarks. Thomas also was named the ASC East Division and the Louisiana Sportswriters Association Hitter of the Week.
