First-time unemployment claims drop

BATON ROUGE — Louisiana labor officials say first-time claims for unemployment benefits decreased last week in the state.

The state Workforce Commission said Monday there were 4,077 initial claims for the week ending April 16. The state recorded 4,201 initial filings the previous week.

For the comparable week ending April 17, 2010, Louisiana recorded 3.989 initial jobless claims.

The four-week moving average of first-time claims increased to 3.989 last week from the previous week’s average of 3,884.

Continued employment insurance weeks claimed for the week ending April 16 increased to 43,491 from the previous week’s total of 42,678.
