BATON ROUGE — Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal has asked U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates to activate 1,500 National Guard troops for up to 45 days to respond to record water levels expected in the Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers.

He says troops from other states will probably be needed because the Louisiana National Guard has limited engineering and aviation resources.

Jindal’s letter says all points along the Mississippi are likely to reach or exceed flood stage by mid-May. He says there’s a significant chance that the Army Corps of Engineers will open the Morganza Spillway for the first time since 1973, flooding the Atchafalaya Basin and requiring significant evacuation.

The governor says flooding from both rivers will threaten lives and cause catastrophic damage to personal property, businesses and government property.
