Staff and wire reports

NATCHITOCHES — Northwestern State will be making its first appearance in the Southland Conference softball tournament in five years despite a 4-3, 8-inning setback to Texas State in the regular-season finale Sunday.

Northwestern (15-15 SLC) completed the regular season with an even .500 record in the Southland and an overall 32-23 — the first 30-win season under third-year coach Donald Pickett and the most victories since winning 35 games in 2005.

NSU will have a rematch against No. 3 seed Texas State on Thursday in the first round of the Southland tourney.

“I’m upset we lost, but we’re excited about making the tournament,” Pickett said. “That was one of our goals at the beginning of the season, to get that chance and make a run for a NCAA tournament bid. Now we’re heading to Huntsville with nothing to lose. We’re going to play loose and leave it all out on the field.”

LSU 8, SOUTH CAROLINA 0: Ashley Langoni and Morgan Russell ripped a pair of two-run singles to fuel a six-run third inning as the No. 21 LSU softball team closed the final regular season of Yvette Girouard’s coaching career in-style with an 8-0 triumph over South Carolina in Baton Rouge.

LSU (38-15, 19-9 SEC) won its 12th consecutive game and secured the No. 4 seed in next week’s SEC Tournament hosted by Ole Miss. The Tigers square off with No. 7 Georgia in the quarterfinals Thursday at 4 p.m. on ESPNU.
