BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana’s education board is considering how to handle the continuing investigation of a New Orleans charter school. Allegations of rape and sexual incidents between students have temporarily shuttered the school and led to the firing of two state employees.

The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education is holding a special meeting Wednesday to discuss the allegations about the Abramson Science and Technology School and whether to revoke the charter of the school’s operator, the Pelican Educational Foundation.

Some BESE members say the allegations showcase a larger problem of lax monitoring of charter schools and the organizations that run them. The education department has proposed changes to its charter school oversight because of Abramson.

Abramson is an independent charter school that operates under the state’s Recovery School District.
