When “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” opens in theaters nationwide today, moviegoers will hear some of Chimp Haven’s own chimpanzees.

“It’s like they’re putting Shreveport on the map and we’re all very excited,” said Linda Brent, Chimp Haven president.

All of the apes in the film were created through computer-generated image technology, a process also used to film the blockbuster film, “Avatar.”

However, Twentieth Century Fox’s audio team still needed to find vocalizations to match the images. So they contacted Chimp Haven and spent three days recording the voices of Chimp Haven’s residents to achieve the perfect ape sounds, from quiet grunts to ear-splitting screeches.

Many of Chimp Haven’s chimps had “speaking” roles, which were used to correspond with the movie’s characters.

“If you’ve ever been to Chimp Haven, you know it’s very noisy. The chimps were very cooperative,” Brent said with a laugh. “We had a lot of fun with the (Twentieth Century Fox) audio team because I think they were really interested in the different sounds that they make unique to themselves.”

Chimp Haven is acknowledged in the film’s closing credits and Brent and the rest of the Chimp Haven staff plan to be right there today to see it.

“We’re all going to go and view it together and it’s very exciting,” said assistant director Jennifer Whitaker.

Whitaker said they’re also excited about the DVD version, to be released at the end of the year. The DVD will include video and information about Chimp Haven in its special features section.
