NATCHITOCHES – Natchitoches officials are asking local residents and businesses to immediately begin water conservation.

The recent drought and consistent days of extreme heat have placed a heavy burden on the city’s water system. There is an adequate volume of water in Sibley Lake, the main water source, but the sheer demand of daily water use by the public has burdened on the water treatment plant.

Utility Director Bryan Wimberly said the city is facing an unprecedented use of its system.

Water customers are being asked to avoid daily watering of lawns, washing cars and making sure to run washing machines or dishwashers only when full.

“The city of Natchitoches is facing an all-time high in water consumption,” said Mayor Wayne McCullen. “Due to the extreme weather conditions we are facing, we strongly encourage all residents and businesses to please be diligent about the amount of water they use.”

Conservation is voluntary. But if problems persist, city officials may enact mandatory measures.

Call the Utility Department at (318) 357-3850 for more information.
